Assistance required urgently :O?

I'm a complete amateur when it comes to cameras, really, i have no idea lol, but regardless i am extremely keen to learn, i'm interested in purchasing either a canon or nikon slr/dslr for under a $1000, i'll be using it to shoot young children & infants both inside & outside, but am confused as to whether this type of camera most suited for my desired purpose, taking it to account it's functions,lens etc..? As you can already tell by my lack of lingo & blatant lack of knowledge on this subject that i have alot to learn lol, so i'm asking anyone with suggestions as to what camera is best, and if there are any downfalls,things to look for/out for.. also if anyone has any experience in shooting infants, do you have any creative suggestions as to what backdriop works best with what lighting etc. and of any interesting themes, prop ideas..
