How can i connect my subwoofer to my receiver?

my receiver needs to have audio plugs (like the red and white ones on an a/v cable) in the back to connect it but the subwoofer requires regular speaker wire. is it possible to hook them up together? and use simple words i'm not very experienced with electronic lingo ha ha
