What type of computer should I purchase?

I have a laptop and a desktop the desk top is running soooooo slow but its old like 2005, (at best), old. So I was looking for a just a tower and its a force buy to get the tower you have to buy the keyboard and mouse, which I don't need . The only reason I need one is for general purposes, I don't game so it shouldn't be that hard....right and then the laptop now has a line that goes from the top of the screen to the bottom so I think its on its last leg. Also I have some software on the Desktop that I can't seem to transfer and the lady at walmart sounded like she new what she was talking about when she told me I could load the software straight from one computer to the other just by using a usb memory device thing. Well they saw me coming. just glad I only bought the memory stick and not the computer she was pushing. I cant transfer the software and I still need a computer that works!!! I just want something that will do what I want that isnt going to cost an arm and a leg what is a great deal? how do i learn "pc lingo"
