What would i use a tesla coil for?

So i want to build a tesla coil cuz it looks cool with all that electricity beaming out of it but can it be used as an energy source? i was looking it up online and it said some funky stuff about how its like low current and high something or something. Idk its confusing cuz i don't understand complicated physics lingo. So can it be used as an alternate energy source? If not, then whats all that purple electricity for?
