Help with guy lingo please?

What does it mean when a guy gives you a ring and says he wants to one day marry you but not any time soon? He also wants to get separate apartments (we live together now) so he can have the experience of being in his own male pad for a while for like a year or so. I didn't ask for a ring but he just popped up with one and brought up marriage. But he doesn't want it right now. I'm confused are we getting closer or farther apart? He wants space? I would of been ok without the ring then the space part would of made sense to me. Can somebody help me? Does this mean he wants to commit but is scared?
